Madam Secretary season 4: Bebe Neuwirth addresses departure

Following Sunday night’s new episode of Madam Secretary Bebe Neuwirth is confirming what so many who watched the episode know. The actress, who played the character of Nadine Tolliver from the beginning of the show, is now exiting — and we’re getting more of a sense now as to what happened.

In a series of posts on Twitter Neuwirth made it clear that it was her decision to leave the CBS series, and that the show’s producers and the network were kind enough to accommodate her request and write in the perfect ending for her character. Check out the text of said tweets below:

“So grateful for my time [at Madam Secretary] – a wonderful show where I love the cast, crew, background artists. So grateful to CBS for accepting my request to depart [the show] and writing a beautiful exit for me. #IllmissNadine … So grateful for everyone’s support & good wishes here in Twitterland.”

Neuwirth’s message is classy in all the right ways in that she confirms her departure without getting altogether negative or vicious towards anyone, which may make sense because there may not be a negative reason for her exit. She may just want to move on. These network shows are exhausting to do and film for long stretches of time. Therefore, it makes a little bit of sense that eventually someone would want to start considering some other things and figuring out some other avenues that they want to explore in their career. To say the least, it’s understandable to start thinking more with that in mind at a certain point. Neuwirth had three great seasons on the show plus a solid start to season 4, and the best thing about the way her exit was written was that Nadine was not killed off. She is still alive, which means that in theory, she could come back down the line. We don’t expect for it to happen but you never quite know with this sort of show. There could always be situations where a new scandal arises and someone tries to call on Nadine in order to testify.

Now, Madam Secretary will move forward with a new storyline on Sunday, October 29 entitled “Shutdown.” You can read more about that at CarterMatt over here, and it certainly seems as though in the aftermath of Nadine’s departure things within the White House Cabinet have never been worse. The government isn’t running, and it looks as though a deadly outbreak could be coming that throws some of the country into peril.
