The New Pope, The Young Pope follow-up, ordered at HBO
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new limited series is the second series created and directed by Paolo Sorrentino. HBO and Sky will form a joint production for the series set in the modern papacy world.
Casting has not been announced for the new series and Jude Law has not been connected to the series either. However, casting for the title role and sub roles will be begin shortly. The series goes into production late next year in Italy.
While no definitive information has been revealed about The New Pope will most likely follow the new pope of the Catholic Church following Pope Pius XIII assumed resignation or some other plausible reason for a new pope to be appointed. However, it would be great to see Jude Law return to see how he is affected at the possible idea of him not being pope anymore. In addition, it will interesting to see how the new pope will differ from Pope Pius XIII. Will the new pope be just as controversial or will be on the opposite side of the spectrum? Or could the new pope have a different way of causing an uprising in the Vatican? Neither would certain make for great television and would be entertaining to watch the drama unfold.
If fans will recall, The Young Pope starred Jude Law as the “fictional first American pope, an outrageously conservative figurehead who seems hell-bent on turning the world of the Vatican upside down.” The series also starred Diane Keaton, Silvio Orlando, and James Cromwell. The series also consisted of 10 episodes, a number we believe will be about the same for The New Pope.
The New Pope screenplay will be written by Sorrentino and Umberto Contarello and will be produced by Lorenzo Mieli and Mario Gianani for Wildside in co-production with Mediapro.
Overall, we no doubt that Sorrentino’s new show will live up to the hype caused by his first limited series, The Young Pope, that became the first Italian television series to be nominated at the Primetime Emmy Awards. In addition, we can’t wait to find out more information.
