SEAL Team full-season order official at CBS; David Boreanaz fans, rejoice!
It looks as though a SEAL Team full-season order is official, and with that David Boreanaz fans can see their favorite actor in action for quite some time.
Today, CBS confirmed that there will be more episodes of the series (also starring Max Thieriot, Neil Brown Jr., AJ Buckley, and Toni Trucks) — this typically means 22 episodes, but we will see what happens here as the season goes along (it could always be added to or subtracted depending on performance down the road). The most important thing is that the show will not be going anywhere in the near future and this marks a significant commitment being shown by the network to a show that has had a fairly solid start to the show. It’s brought in more viewers than any other CBS show on Wednesday, and has performed well even in competition with mainstay Law & Order: SVU and Modern Family up against it. While its live+same-day viewing in the 18-49 demographic has been solid but unspectacular, it has performed well in time-shifted viewing. Having Boreanaz at the top of the call sheet is significant for the show given that it allows for there to be an instant draw beyond just the pro-military story.
With this renewal, we do also have some validation of the wide array of military-themed programming that we’ve seen crop up over the course of the past several months. It was difficult to know from the onset how some of these shows were going to fare, but with SEAL Team and The Brave we have seen stability the past two weeks. Viewers who are on board these shows are liking what they are seeing enough to stick with them. Whether or not this pattern holds true by the time we get around to the end of the season is something that we’ll have to wait and see down the road.
Does it also increase the odds of a season 2 renewal for SEAL Team? Absolutely. One of the biggest benefits of the move happening so early is that it shows potential viewers that CBS has confidence in the show and they, in turn, should have some confidence back that it won’t be going anywhere in the near future. We know that one of the big reasons viewers do shy away from watching shows early on is fear of cancellation. It absolutely could still happen here, but at least the series is being given a little bit of time in order to properly prove itself.
