Arrow season 6 spoilers: Will there be Black Siren flashbacks?

Black Siren flashbacks

With Katie Cassidy once more a series regular on Arrowit’s fair to say that you now have the means to do Black Siren flashbacks. The character won’t be going anywhere in the near future, so you have time to work around with what you want to do with her — this isn’t a season where she hovers around the perimeter and there is no time to dive into anything. If she is going to be one of the main villains — and it does appear that is the case — you may still want to understand more of how she became that way. It feels like Arrow tends to take the nurture side of the whole nature vs. nurture debate. It prefers to think that villains became that way over time as opposed to them being born diabolical and intent on destroying most of humanity.

So there is interest in learning how Laurel Lance on Earth-2 became Black Siren and what her ultimate goals are. You should see some of that play out through season 6. As for how much, and in what form, executive producer Marc Guggenheim is hesitant to tip his cap. This is what he would say in a new piece via Entertainment Weekly:

“We definitely want to share with the audience Black Siren’s backstory and how the worlds are different. We’ve talked about, like, do we do a flashback? I’ll be honest, in my mind right now, and this may be sharing too much of my process, but it’s a little weird to do a flashback to a parallel universe on a show that’s not Flash, so until we crack that, I can’t promise that, but it’s very important for the arc of the year for the audience to understand where Black Siren is coming from. The thing is, we’ve really taken to just calling her Laurel, because this is Laurel. It’s just a different Laurel than the one we knew for four years.”

Where we disagree with Guggenheim slightly is that if Arrow had no problem telling a strange story about magic for a year or two with Ra’s al Ghul and Damien Darhk, we don’t quite understand why it is an issue for them to feature an Earth-2 story. There’s excitement there given that you could see alternate versions of some of the other characters we know, including some we haven’t seen or heard much about on that Earth as of yet. It may not be a priority from the jump this season but we could see it being a really great, fascinating story to touch on once you roll around more to the February sweeps.
