The Good Doctor receives full 22-episode order from ABC

Freddie Highmore's The Good Doctor

For everyone out there who loves Freddie Highmore’s The Good Doctorconsider this to be your prescription for happiness. Today, ABC President Channing Dungey confirmed that the show is going to be getting a full-season order of 22 episodes, and it’s coming after just two incredibly strong episodes.

The show’s final ratings for Monday pretty much in line with the premiere, so let’s describe this pickup in this way: If you are a major network and your 10:00 p.m. Eastern show in 2017 is getting more than a 2.0 rating in the demo, don’t you pick it up in a split second? This was a complete no-brainer for ABC to bring this show on board for a full season, and the pickup is validation of that very thing.

Here is what Dungey had to say in full in a statement:

“We are thrilled to announce that we are giving our viewers additional episodes of The Good Doctor. We have an amazing team in front of and behind the camera, led by Freddie Highmore’s incredibly nuanced performance as Dr. Shaun Murphy, and we’re confident the show will continue to captivate our audience.”

The Good Doctor represents arguably Dungey’s biggest win at ABC to date; while it looked at first that she may have something in that vein in Designated Survivor last year, the ratings for the Kiefer Sutherland show slipped fairly quickly as time went on. Here, the format of the show allows there to be a more consistent audience week in and week out; you can miss an episode and not feel completely lost as to what’s going on.

Now, is this the part where we humble-brag about predicting this earlier today?

So what about a season 2?

The biggest piece of advice we at CarterMatt can offer you is to keep watching the show live, given that we figure ABC could actually order a second season as early as Christmas if the show keeps some of these ratings up. As of right now The Good Doctor is challenging Grey’s Anatomy as the #1 drama that the network has, and it’s doing this while out-shining its lead-in of Dancing with the Stars. It’s ratings are bringing us back to the earlier seasons of Castle, and we honestly didn’t think at one point that the network was ever going to get those sort of numbers again in this timeslot.
