American Horror Story, Nashville alum Connie Britton joins ‘9-1-1’
According to a new report from Deadline, Britton is going to take on one of the main roles in the drama, which is being hailed as a procedural that looks at this field from a variety of different perspectives — whether it be firefighters, paramedics, or people working the other side in call operators. Rumor as it that Britton will play the latter. The show feels a little bit like a more expansive Chicago Fire, and there seem to be a number of these cropping up now given that Grey’s Anatomy also has itself a firefighting spin-off coming in 2018 (the same year that this show is slated to premiere).
Joining Britton in the cast are Angela Bassett and Peter Krause, and in general, this show seems like it has American Horror Story touches all over the place. Connie starred in the first season of the FX anthology series, whereas Bassett has been a part of several different seasons herself. Meanwhile, 9-1-1 showrunner Tim Minear has written and executive-produced American Horror Story for many years alongside Murphy, who has had a number of series on Fox/FX already including Glee, Nip-Tuck, and Scream Queens. The majority of them have had some degree of success; we actually think Scream Queens was one of his better outings, but suffered mostly from the fact that it was airing on a network that didn’t quite understand its tone. 9-1-1 seems like the right fit for broadcast, and getting Britton as the lead absolutely helps. She’s got a huge following thanks of course to her roles in Nashville and Friday Night Lights, and she must have felt the time was right to return to series television. As many fans out there know (Nashville spoiler alert), her character of Rayna James was killed off during this past season of the CMT series.
There is no premiere date for 9-1-1 just yet, but we wouldn’t be altogether shocked if Fox, knowing that they want to get big ratings out of the show, holds it and tries to launch it in the fall of 2018. It’s not coming on the air anytime soon no matter what. No matter when it premieres we’ll be sure to have a wide array of CarterMatt coverage of it.
