Supergirl season 3 episode 2 spoilers: James, Reign, and Lena Luthor ties
What we can say is that the “Triggers” synopsis below does do a reasonably good job of explaining what the story is going to be in this episode on multiple different fronts:
“Psi (guest star Yael Grobglas), a thief with psychic powers, attacks National City. Able to immobilize people by tapping into their worst fears, Psi proves a formidable opponent for Supergirl. Meanwhile, James (Mehcad Brooks) and Lena (Katie McGrath) are at an impasse, and Samantha starts her new job at L-Corp. David McWhirter directed the episode written by Gabriel Llanas & Anna Musky-Goldwyn (#302). Original airdate 10/16/2017.”
The first thing to note here is that Psi sounds almost like the Supergirl version of the Scarecrow from the Batman universe, which is ironic given their work on Gotham as of late. It’s also cool to be seeing Grobglas coming over from Jane the Virgin to do an episode of this show — CW stars all stick together!
Now, we’ve also got the rumors of a James / Lena connection, which makes sense given that this is The CW and the network always does love to pair people up — we just feel rather bad for James given that he keeps getting paired off with people who already have popular ‘ships elsewhere. It’s also interesting to note that Samantha Arias, who will eventually become Reign, is going to start working for L-Corp so early in the season. We don’t think Lena is working for the dark side, but who knows? It’s possible that in one way or another, she or her company could end up bringing Samantha closer to her real destiny as a Worldkiller. This all will surface eventually this season, and when it does there’s a legitimate reason to worry for everyone’s sake.
Looking beyond just this episode
There are a few interesting things coming up for Supergirl later this season — we imagine that there’s going to be a huge Mon-El episode that explores more of what happened to the character after his departure from National City, we’re going to see more of the Alex / Maggie relationship unfold, and we also feel as though the crossover is going to create all sorts of fun dynamics. We know that at the center of that is a WestAllen wedding, so who knows what the event could also cause?
