Emmys 2017: A full review of the show, Stephen Colbert, and more
The host this year was Stephen Colbert and we believe he did an amazing job. He entertained us with a song and many jokes without it being too much. He delivered his jokes at the perfect moment and when they was a sketch, they didn’t last too long. At the center of many of Colbert’s jokes was, unsurprisingly, President Donald Trump and, to be honest, they were funny enough that we forgave Colbert for making so many of them. Even the comedies the presenters delivered was pretty funny.
As far as the awards that were handed out, the winners’ speeches were for the most part were short and sweet. Unlike most award shows not many people were played out by the music (save for poor Sterling K. Brown) and many of them didn’t go off in a tangent. They thanked their families, their cast and crew, their managers, basically people who needed to be thanked. It was great to see and hear this.
The Emmys didn’t have any hiccups, at least ones that were noticeable, and as a whole the show was very enjoyable. The big winner of the night was Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale as it walked away with many of the major awards of the night, including directing, writing, and acting.
Some of the night’s other big winners to kick off he night were The Crown‘s John Lithgrow and Saturday Night Live‘s Kate McKinnon. These were great wins and definitely made most viewers believe that the rightful winner would indeed take home the prize. Lithgrow’s performance in The Crown was, in our opinion, is best performance of his career and that’s saying something because he was delivered some great performances throughout the years. On the other side, Kate McKinnon is the comedy queen. Her performance as Hilary Clinton is one that we will never forget and will play on YouTube when we need a laugh. In the other supporting categories it was The Handmaid’s Tale‘s Ann Dowd that took home the Outstanding Supporting Actress award. Her surprise and emotional speech made us feel so happy for her. Alec Baldwin took the time during his Outstanding Supporting Actor speech to thank President Donald Trump while offering his two cents into thee bucket jokes directed toward President Trump tonight.
In the Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress in a Comedy Series it was Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Veep who took home her seventh consecutive win and Donald Glover had a big night by winning in this category as well Best Directing in a comedy series for Atlanta. Both speeches were sincere and short but also extremely deserving.
In Outstanding Lead Actor Sterling K. Brown won his second Emmy for his role in This Is Us and thanked his incredible cast and many others as the music (as mentioned) played him out. His win was big for NBC after the series didn’t win in the other major categories of the night.
For Outstanding Actress in a Drama it was finally Elisabeth Moss’s night after seven nominations and zero wins The Handmaid’s Tale made her eighth nomination the winner. The Handmaid’s Tale was also the winner of Outstanding Drama Series.
This year’s Emmys was definitely the most packed because there were so many great shows this year and it could have gone either way. Stranger Things, The Crown, and This Is Us all received high praises from critics and made this year an exciting one. We liked to congratulated all of the nominated shows, actors, and crew members for some outstanding work this year and cannot wait for the next seasons to return.
