Outlander season 3 episode 3 preview: Meet David Berry’s Lord John Grey

There are an abundance of different things to anticipate on Outlander season 3 episode 3, but David Berry as Lord John Grey is near the top. He is one of the most beloved characters from the Diana Gabaldon source material, so much so that there is a separate series of novels named specifically after the character. Over the course of the upcoming episode you’ll see the new iteration of the character (who first played a part during the second season), and you’ll learn that he could be essential for allowing Jamie to have a future that exists beyond just shackles. As a matter of fact, he confirms as much in the promo for this episode.

We do think that the Lord John character perhaps best symbolizes something that we’ve found to be very true when it comes to Outlander time and time again, and that is the simple notion of the past heavily impacting the present. Because of one decision that Jamie made during the second season, his life has been spared many times over. First, he was let go rather than executed, and now Lord John may be keeping him alive by getting him away from such a terrible fate. This is all coupled with how the season 2 story with Fergus heavily influenced much of the character’s affection for him now.

Outlander season 3 episode 3 synopsis – “In prison, Jamie discovers that an old foe has become the warden – and now has the power to make his life a living hell. Over the years, Claire and Frank both put their best foot forward to share a harmonious marriage, but an uninvited guest shatters this illusion, bringing their differences to light.”

The promo does certainly give you a tremendous sense of how terrible things are starting to become between Claire and her husband, as they’ve tried to keep up appearances — but that only works for so long. We saw during episode 2 some attempts from Claire to make things a little bit better, but she cannot help the fact that her mind is elsewhere. She’s not intentionally trying to hurt Frank, and we don’t think Frank is intentionally trying to get progressively more and more angry with her. It’s all a consequence of the two existing in a marriage that isn’t really working for either one of them. They may be attempting to offer some stability to Brianna, but the question at the end of the day here is if stability is really all that great if it exists within a near-constant sort of misery.
