One Game of Thrones spin-off idea is about ‘recognizable event’
What’s also odd is that there are currently four different spin-off ideas that are currently out there — they won’t all become series, but this is clearly the network hedging their bets. They’re well aware of the fact that the original was beloved and they don’t want to screw this up — as they should be. HBO has experienced more success with Game of Thrones than any other show in their history, and it’s pretty hard to imagine the network ever being in a position where they could replicate this down the road.
Still, you gotta try, and the network has hired Jane Goodman of The Debt, Stardust, Kick-Ass, and more to be one of the people coming up with ideas alongside George R.R. Martin and others. Speaking to IGN for the first time about her proposed series, we get a valuable piece of information that if you enjoyed the previous Game of Thrones seasons, odds are that you will probably enjoy this one, as well:
“I think I can say if I was able to say what mine was — yeah, I think as a book reader or as someone who watched the series, you would say, ‘Oh, that! OK.’ Yeah, it would be recognizable as a past event, but I think that’s probably as far as I can go.”
We know that Robert’s Rebellion is one idea that’s been out there from many fans, but we wouldn’t mind if the show dipped back deeper in the past so that we could see more of the foundations of the present crisis. In the right circumstance, we also wouldn’t be opposed to something that was a little more political or a little more intimate — or something that served either as a companion series or a sequel to the original show. We know why HBO wouldn’t want to do that (prequels are easier to promote and don’t spoil the end to the original show), but it’s something to consider in the future.
Maybe around the time Game of Thrones season 8 comes out we’ll actually learn one way or another what’s coming in terms of a spin-off. Time will tell.
