The Flash season 4 spoilers: What’s the road ahead for Joe West?

Joe West

We’ve done a good bit of reporting on The Flash season 4 through the lens of other characters; why not Joe West? This does feel like the right time to throw more of the spotlight onto him — he’s in a better place personally than he’s been in some time, given that he and Cecile are in a committed relationship. Could other things be better? Sure, especially since Barry is off in the Speed Force and Iris West is in the process of trying to figure out a way to bring him back.

For the sake of this article, though, let’s speak mostly about the status of Joe and Cecile. Speaking per ComicBook.com recently, Jesse L. Martin had the following to say:

“It’s going to progress … That’s really all I can say. She’s going to be around, so we’ll see what happens. I love the idea that Joe’s got a girlfriend, so that gets explored. I really, really love that, because I spent so much time just dealing with the kids and the gang over at STAR Labs. Now I have somebody at home to deal with, in a good way.”

Basically, any actor wants to have an opportunity to do a wide array of things, and for Martin, having Cecile around enables that for Joe. All of a sudden, he is a character with his own life as opposed to just a character who serves as a way to drop exposition on the team or have some tender heart-to-heart conversations with them. He deserves his own independent happiness — though, the biggest problem that is here is the idea that it could very easily be taken away.

Given that this is a superhero show and one of the most effective things that a villain can do is strip someone of a person that they love, you have to consider it possible that The Thinker (Neil Sandilands) is going to turn up and decide to capture Cecile for whatever reason — you can say the same thing for virtually any other villain on this show. We’ve certainly seen quite a few other people die on the show already, whether it be Eddie Thawne, Ronnie Raymond, Henry Allen, or most recently H.R. in the season 3 finale. (Technically, you can sort of throw Earth-1 Harrison into there alongside Zoom, but both of those are a little more complicated.)

For now, the biggest thing to rejoice is simply the opportunity to see Martin getting some more great material. Think about the caliber of actor that he is, and couple that with what we know that he’s capable of doing. The stronger material for him, the better off it is. He and Harry are also two of the only members of the over-40 crowd on the show.
