Looking past Call the Midwife season 7, how long can series last?

Call the Midwife season 7

Call the Midwife season 7 is currently in production, and we’re going to get the same combination of great stuff for it that we always have. You’re going to see the story start off with Christmas Special, and then beyond that the latest batch of episodes is going to start airing in January.

Will this be the final batch of episodes for the BBC institution? Far from it, given that we know already that the show’s been renewed through season 7! That’s a shocking amount of devotion for a series in advance, and definitely not something that we’re accustomed to seeing from a network in Great Britain. Yet, it’s also a testament to the sort of work that writer Heidi Thomas and the team do in order to bring this story to TV, and the reception of many of the show’s fans to it. It’s one of the network’s highest-rated shows, it’s beloved by many of its fans, and there are opportunities to tell more great stories with these characters.

This is ultimately one of the few shows on television where it feels as though its future is not dictated by the cast. We’ve already seen both Jessica Raine and Miranda Hart depart the series, and we’re getting set to lose Emerald Fennell after she was only in the most-recent season of the show part-time. Yet, the story goes on, and you do still have some cast members around like Helen George and Charlotte Ritchie. There are also some newcomers arriving at Nonnatus House, and through them, you’ll see more of the story and this rich world.

We do think that there is somewhat more of a natural end point for the show, but it’s not for a while. This is a show about religious doctrine and medical practices, and once it gets to the point where the latter is fairly similar to the way things are in the present day, it starts to lose a little bit of its bite and what makes it interesting. We’re not sure viewers would watch Call the Midwife in the same numbers if it was similar to a modern medical drama.

Luckily, we do still think that there is a great deal of time before we make it to that point. You’ve got opportunities until then to see how Barbara moves forward following her wedding, if Trixie can find happiness that lasts away from work, and how some of the new midwives integrate. Meanwhile, there is also room for Thomas to explore more of the issues of the day impacting some of these women.
