Suits season 7 episode 5 review: Mike goes deep; did Louis save Paula?
What is so interesting about this case is that it gives you a reflection of who Paula is and why she is with Harvey: She has a tendency to mix her professional and personal lives. Her relationship was also far more complicated with her ex than she first let on, which led to Louis walking into a minefield when he went in to meet him and his counsel.
Why did Paula keep much of this a secret? It was out of her own discomfort mostly, coupled with the relationship that Louis has with Harvey. What was so fantastic about this story is that through the conversations these characters shared, it suddenly became so much clearer as to why Paula was so wary about her relationship with Harvey. She knew that her ex was abusive, creepy, and really a total stalker. In due time, Louis was able to use all of this in order to get the lawsuit dropped.
Ultimately, Paula is now in a better place, but Harvey did still find out about her history (not through Louis) in his own way. They had their own moment at the end of the episode, and their relationship — messy as it is — still seems to be going strong.
Mike gets in too deep with Oliver
Remember that Mike made an agreement with Alex Williams — it’s too bad that this said agreement is already starting to fall by the wayside thanks to Mike’s emphasis on doing good more than following rules. He went with Oliver to the prison to get more information on the massive crisis going on there with a lack of guards.
Eventually, Mike started to find some ways in which to help Oliver, but one of the big ones involved him paying a visit to his old “friend” Frank Gallo — otherwise known as the dude who tried to kill him last season. In true Mike Ross fashion, he took his own safety out of the equation, went to meet Gallo, and eventually convinced him (even though it wasn’t easy) to convince him to testify against the abusive guards. In turn, Mike had to ensure that his daughter on the outside had an actual chance at a better life — something that he certainly did not give her being such a terrible person.
Here’s the problem: The longer that Mike lasts on the case, the more danger that he’s putting himself into. Oliver’s boss already learned the truth, and then Rachel did at the end of the episode.
The Holly quest goes south
The Donna storyline that we had tonight related to Holly, who Harvey was interested in hiring as a consultant in the wake of all of her success in various jobs. Yet, Donna’s skepticism turned her away. She did the right thing in questioning her history; yet, it was still a tough thing to lose someone who could be valuable to the firm.
Overall
This was another great episode of Suits, especially in terms of the central question Rachel asked Mike in the closing seconds: What is your word worth? This played out in many different ways throughout the hour, but Mike’s at the center of it and he needs to figure out what sort of person he wants to be. Grade: A-.
