This Shadowhunters season 2 episode 18 scene may make Malec hearts melt
This preview, clearly the morning after a night together, is notable for many different reasons — the music, the chemistry, the comment about acid-washed jeans (hey, some humor!), and a nice moment of vulnerability between the two characters. One of the challenges that come with writing a character like Magnus is figuring out a way to initiate some element of fear and stakes with him. This is an immortal character, someone who has seen hundreds of years of torment already. With that, it is fair to wonder precisely what it is that this character could be afraid of. Is there anything that keeps him up in the middle of the night?
At the end of this sneak preview, you see Alec asking Magnus a variation of this question, and the answer that comes with that should prove interesting. (Alas, it’s not seen in the video.) We would imagine that for Magnus, loneliness could be one of his greatest fears given that he must see people close to him come and go, and yet, he lives on. He continues to live knowing that others will grow old, and he likely wants to embrace every moment. He wants to know that they can trust them.
This is what brings us back to the central issue for Malec at present: Will the two characters be able to get on the same page? Magnus was enraged over Alec’s secrets in the last episode, especially when he had been so vulnerable previously.
Is this sneak peek a flashback?
We certainly worry, given the fact that these two seem so happy in the preview, and the lighting that is here is the sort of soft, yellow variety that you often see in many of these clips.
If this is a flashback, the reason that we could be seeing this now is that it offers up some sort of insight into what Magnus wants out of a relationship or how Alec could fix the problem that they are having. This could be a mere context clue for a larger story that exists for the pair in this episode. Magnus has to make some key decisions, but whether they relate to Alec or something else entirely remains to be seen. We just know that he as a character is far stronger when he and Alec are on the same page and working together.
Luckily, there are still three episodes for the two of them to sort everything out this season. We’re fairly confident that they will.
