2017 MTV VMAs announce Katy Perry as host and performer

Katy Perry has been announced as this year’s MTV Video Music Awards host and is also set to perform.

According to Variety, she is the first performer announced for this year’s awards. Perry also happens to be the most-nominated artists with five nominations. These nominations include best pop, best direction, and best visual effects for her hit song “Chained to the Rhythm” along with best art direction for “Bon Appetit” and Best Collaboration with Calvin Harris, Pharrell Williams, and Big Sean for “Feels”.

While Perry has been nominated many times before, this will be her first time hosting the VMAs and Bruce Gillmer, head of music and music talent of Viacom’s global entertainment group, stated his excitement about Katy Perry’s part in this year’s awards.

“We’re thrilled to have global phenomenon Katy Perry as the host and a performer at the 2017 VMAs. She is at the forefront of music culture and the perfect person to anchor this year’s show, which promises to be one of the most diverse and music-filled in VMA history.”

For her part, Katy Perry released a statement about her preparations for hosting the show, including the signature VMA trophy, the Moonman statue.

“I’ve been training with MTV in zero gravity, eating astronaut ice cream, and I’m on a group text with Buzz Aldrin and Neil deGrasse Tyson. Come August 27th, I’ll be ready to be your MOONWOMAN! Brace for impact, kids.”

We certainly are intrigued with this announcement and have high hopes for Katy Perry. She is definitely comfortable on stage because of her singing career, but it will be interesting to see how she handles a different role on the stage. (She’s been a host previously on Saturday Night Live and knows how unpredictable live TV can be!) Overall, we wish her the best of luck.

This won’t be the last time fans see Katy Perry in a high-profile television gig because the Grammy winner is set to serve as a judge on the reboot of American Idol that will premiere on ABC this fall alongside original host Ryan Seacrest.

The last time the VMAs had a host was in 2015 with Miley Cyrus. In 2016, the show opted to go with two commentators, Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, instead of having a host.

The VMAs airs August 27, 2017 at 8 p.m. live from the Forum in Inglewood, California.
