Shooter season 2 episode order cut after Ryan Phillippe injury

Shooter season 2 is going to end a little bit earlier than expected, and it all stems from Ryan Phillippe’s recent leg injury. This was an accident that was suffered away from work, and his recovery time is such that the show has decided that they’re going to halt filming a little bit earlier than planned.

Here is what the studio Paramount TV had to say about this decision in a statement via Deadline:

“Our priority is Ryan’s recovery, and after conversations with our partners at USA and UCP we’ve decided that we will wrap S2 with episode 208.”

We assume that this was a difficult decision for the studio to make, but we don’t quite know how you make another one when you consider some of the circumstances that went into it. After all, Shooter season 2 is currently airing, and unless you completely redid the whole storyline, it’s hard to leave Phillippe’s Bob Lee Swagger in a position where he can’t run around. This is an action-heavy show, and there is only so much time in which you can use stunt doubles in order to have the story make sense.

It’s a little surprising to see that a season as popular as this will only have eight episodes, but therein lies the silver lining: It’s popular. The odds are extremely high that Shooter will have a third season, and we certainly hope that this one has a little luck pushing it forward. After all, the first season was delayed several months because of real-life events, and this season is probably going to end on an abrupt note now. They can just pick things back up for the next season, and if we’re lucky, maybe they’ll extend that one to thirteen episodes to help make up for the shorter run this time around. (That may or may not be possible given how action-heavy this show is, but there is nothing wrong with hoping.)

Are the ratings down?

Sure. The second episode of the season last night generated a 0.3 rating, which is down pretty big from the premiere. Yet, we’re only talking about two episodes, and this is only in terms of live+same-day viewing. There is every reason in the world to think that it will bounce back, and it’s a very solid performer in terms of live+3 and live+7 numbers. Nothing to be concerned over, but we’ll keep following the ratings just to ensure things keep going well.
