Is Grey’s Anatomy canceled? Don’t believe Twitter’s trending topic

Grey's Anatomy canceledIs Grey’s Anatomy canceled? If you were to look on Twitter late Sunday night, you may wonder that thanks to an internet trend.

For whatever reason, the phrase #GreysAnatomyCanceled found itself on social media, which consequently caused some out there to freak out. Hopefully, in this fake-news era, many diehard fans of the show remembered one thing more so than all else: Just because some people are discussing it online doesn’t quite mean that it’s accurate.

Grey’s Anatomy is not canceled. It’s not going anywhere in the near future. The show is ABC’s #1 scripted drama in terms of total viewers and adults 18-49. We don’t know how else to say that this is a show with a long life still on the network. Ellen Pompeo still loves being a part of the show, and there is even a firefighter spin-off coming in the future. That should be perfect evidence that there is nothing to worry about here. This show is one of those few on television that really does have that sort of ability to go on for however long that the parties involved want it to — and there is no evidence out there that this is the final season.

The funny thing is that a few years ago, we were far more worried about the show’s future than we are right now. Ever since Patrick Dempsey’s departure, Grey’s Anatomy has really recovered and found more of a voice and a place again. Admittedly, it’s not something that we imagined at one point, but the show still has a lot of great things going for it — smart writing, directing, and a great cast and crew.

Will Grey’s Anatomy top the ratings again for ABC’s scripted drama slate in season 14? We definitely have a feeling that this is going to happen, mostly given that they haven’t yet shown the capacity to have a hit of the same level in 2017. Maybe you can look towards The Good Doctor with Freddie Highmore as a contender, but that’s the operative word there: Contender. It’s far from where it needs to be at the moment to be considered a major threat.
