Shadowhunters season 2 spoilers: Don’t expect happier times for Jace…
Before we do look towards the future, though, we should stop in for a moment and reflect a little bit on the past. So far in the second half of this season, we’ve seen him try to cope with the news that he and Clary are not related and what that means — he was able for a while to use that as a crutch to hide his feelings, and he can’t do that anymore. This sentiment is probably blown up even further courtesy of what happened at the Seelie Court last week. Clary may have claimed that she didn’t want to kiss Jace, but his release from the vines says otherwise. Is it possible that this was all a deliberate game of the Queen to manipulate Clary’s feelings and sever her relationship with Simon, almost as punishment for him not wanting to align himself with her? Sure, but it could also be taken at face value — somewhere, there are some feelings that Clary has for him, and while she may not want to address them, that doesn’t make it any less present in the innermost corner of her mind.
Alas, for poor Jace there are no happy times coming after this twist. He’s still got whatever happened with Maia on his mind, his new family lineage, the unknown threat of Sebastian, and a lot of other drama on his plate. It also sounds like there is SO much more trouble ahead judging from what Dominic Sherwood said recently in a new interview with TVLine:
“The writers keep telling me that it gets worse for Jace before it gets better, and I’m like, ‘When does it get better?’ We finished shooting Season 2, and it didn’t get better. We’ve spoken briefly about what’s coming in Season 3, and it doesn’t get better. So I ask them, ‘When is there a light at the end of the tunnel for Jace?’ and they’re like, ‘We don’t know.’ It just keeps getting worse.”
By the end of the season, one of the things that we expect to see is the Jace – Clary – Simon triangle brought up again; heck, it may even come back when the show returns next week! While there are clearly some other things that these characters have to worry themselves with, the main reason why relationship drama keeps coming up is ultimately rather simple: It’s a part of humanity. It’s what grounds these characters, and keeps them from losing a sense of who they are without powers. It’s therefore essential to what is going on with their psychology.
