This Is Us season 2 promotes young actors; why that’s so darn important
As first reported by Deadline, a wide array of young actors including Hannah Zeile (teenage Kate), Niles Fitch (teenage Randall), Logan Shroyer (teenage Kevin), Mackenzie Hancsicsak (young Kate) and Parker Bates (young Kevin) are all going to be series regulars for the new season. Meanwhile, Faithe Herman and Eris Baker, who play Randall and Beth’s daughters Annie and Tess, are also going to be back in such a role.
Why is all of this so critical to the show’s long-term success? It has to do with one word: Consistency. It’s a word that in turn takes many forms. You want to be able to have the same cast working on the show behind the scenes, since you want to keep building up that chemistry among the actors. Also, you clearly have performers that work now, and even if you have the best casting directors in the business, kids are unpredictable. You can hire someone, thinking that they are going to be exceptional in the part, and they turn out to be a nightmare. Luckily, there are no nightmares here.
That same consistency transfers over to viewers, as they’re the people who are watching the show on a regular basis and wants to see the same fans. For a show that is more action-heavy like a Game of Thrones, you can hide recastings better since there’s so much going on. (We bring up this show given that there are so many recastings they’ve done over the years, whether it be Daario, Tommen, or The Mountain.) For This Is Us, the entire constitution of the show is its emotional fabric. If you’re missing someone or the show feels off with a new actor, it takes you out of that world. The last thing that you want to be doing when watching any show is sitting there wondering whether or not the show brought in a new kid.
Where’s Lonnie Chavis?
Good question. The young actor behind (fittingly) young Randall is a series regular over on Showtime’s White Famous and can’t do a full-time job (as least as much of a full-time job it can be for a kid) at two separate places. With that, he will still recur here for now. Chavis has had a fairly busy year, given that he also appeared recently in an episode of Supergirl where he was a key part of a story revolving around James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks).

This Is Us season 2 premieres on NBC in September, and it’s back in its season 1 timeslot after being temporarily considered for Thursday nights.
