Game of Thrones season 7: Kit Harington on an unusual Iceland challenge

Kit Harington

Game of Thrones season 7 returned to Iceland for production this year, but what may surprise you is just how different an Iceland it was.

Apparently, there is an odd sort of inverse relationship going on right now between the winter that is arriving on the show, and the winter that is here in real life. The quote Kit Harington gives Entertainment Weekly is almost rather sad when you think about just how much things have changed in terms of global warming over the span of just a handful of years:

“The one irony I found this year, it was a very sad irony: We went to Iceland to find snow, because winter is [there. We got there and we were lucky to get the snow we did because, in our world, winter is definitely not here. It’s this weird parallel, the opposite parallel. We go out there this year, and the glacier that me and [former co-star Rose Leslie] filmed on four years ago, I saw it and it has shrunk. I saw climate change and global warming with my own eyes, and it is terrifying.”

We’re sure that Game of Thrones will probably look more wintry than ever this year just because the folks behind the scenes are wizards in that regard. However, that doesn’t mean that they have the ability to turn around the world. Quotes like this are important in bringing a light to some of the bigger issues that are out there beyond just TV, and using a show like Game of Thrones in order to raise these discussions is smart. With that, you reach an audience of people who may not have either watched or cared otherwise.

Now, let’s just hope that these new episodes this fall feature some badass Jon Snow moments in these beautiful settings. We’ll keep the comments close to mind, though we imagine that the show will also do a rather exceptional job of still transporting us to another world. Also, it’ll probably make your hair stand on end because of all of the big-time battle sequences that are coming.
