Game of Thrones season 7 showrunners open up on faster pace

Going into Game of Thrones season 7, one of the things that we kept hearing about for a lengthy period of time was the faster pace. With there being only 13 more episodes to go in the series, the pressure was now on to make each one of them as tight and as conclusive as possible.

Over the course of these stories, it feels fair to say that there’s going to be a lot going on. With that said, it’s not as though the show is blowing past key beats, either. As a part of a lengthy new interview with Entertainment Weekly, co-showrunner David Benioff described the process that was undertaken, and the way that they are organizing what’s next:

“For a long time we’ve been talking about “the wars to come.” That war is pretty much here. So it’s really trying to find a way to make the storytelling work without feeling like we’re rushing it. You want to give characters their due, and pretty much all the characters left are important characters, even the ones who might have started out as relatively minor characters have become significant in their own right.”

There is also some truth to recent comments that the remaining cast are all working now significantly more than ever before, largely because of the fact that there are fewer people lift to split up the show between. Everyone’s contributing more as a result of that, and this will continue moving into season 8 — perhaps even more so, when you consider that there are likely to be some actors whose characters die before season 7 comes to a close.

The best way to describe what Benioff is saying here is this: Expect things to get crazier, but not so much crazier that the entire show changes. This will still be the same Game of Thrones that you’ve come to enjoy over time, but in a way that offers up a sense of finality and that the show is truly building towards something. New episodes start airing on Sunday, July 16, and you can go ahead and expect to see some further news on these stories as we get closer to them airing.
