Shameless: Jessica Szohr booked for season 8
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Szohr will play Nessa, a “strong, tough, and smart lesbian” who is a serving as a tenant in Fiona’s (Emmy Rossum) newly purchased apartment building. The two will develop a strong friendship.
This friendship could be a welcomed story, given that most of Fiona’s relationships portrayed in the show are with men. Seeing Fiona interact with someone she could confide may give her a chance at a relationship that can last.
The friendship could also take a different turn. The description of Szohr’s character specifically stated that she is a lesbian. Could the “strong friendship” be a code for intimate relationship? Only the upcoming season can answer these questions. Judging from Fiona’s past, this is the sort of show where almost anything is possible.
The casting of Szohr comes after the seventh season said farewell to Monica, the Gallaghers’ absentee mother. The family decided to move on after Monica’s death. For Fiona, this included purchasing the apartment complex. She is trying to find a way to move her life in a forward, more positive direction, which is difficult at times given all of the various shenanigans that are going on around her.
Shameless depicts Frank Gallagher (William H. Macy), a single parent of six who spends his days drunk or participating in misadventures, while his kids must learn to take care of themselves. Frank goes through his good and bad times, and as a result of that the other members of his family are going to need to learn some of that self-reliance.
The show stars William H. Macy, Emmy Rossum, Justin Chatwin, Ethan Cutkosky, Jeremy Allen White, Cameron Monaghan, Emma Kenney, Shanola Hampton, Steve Howey, Joan Cusack, Noel Fisher, Brennan Kane Johnson, and Blake Alexander Johnson.
Szohr returns to Showtime following her brief appearance on the premium cable network’s Twin Peaks revival. Her credits also include Gossip Girl (the CW), Complications (USA Network) and Kingdom (Audience Network).
