Doctor Who: Director named for Peter Capaldi’s regeneration episode
As it turns out, this special is also looking to be the final one for Rachel Talalay as director. She has helmed the finales for both of the past two seasons, and will also do the same thing for the final season 10 episodes, as well. This is just the icing on the cake, and judging from this message she is fairly keen on the idea of being able to go out with both Moffat and Capaldi, given their legacy is all very closely tied together.
Of course, it should be noted that Talalay’s work is such that it could be watching many times over and for many years to come. Yet, simultaneously it’s also hard to be upset over her work and her thinking that now is the time to move on. All things end, and for her there may be something important about new showrunner Chris Chibnall getting largely a clean slate. One thing he could still have as a holdover is Pearl Mackie as a companion; beyond that, much of the remainder of the world could feel new.
To all Doctor Who fans, it’s the end of an era. Let’s just hope that you are ready for the emotional that is likely going to come along with that. Regenerations are some of the most emotional things possibly executed on this show, and for one reason or another it’s almost impossible to watch one without getting teary-eyed in some manner. It’s easy to get personally invested with a Doctor, just because each one makes the role their own while also making an effort for the fans to feel like they have a special bond with them.
