Absentia spoilers: Who is this mystery man?

It’s been a little while since we posted an Absentia discussion piece; luckily, the folks over at Sony now have presented a mystery man to discuss!

In the post on Twitter below from the show’s official account, you get a chance to see a mysterious guy dressed in shirt in tie alongside the message of “life doesn’t give us second chances too often. Make the most of it.” This caption feels mostly like a reference to Stana Katic’s character of Emily, a woman who has a new chance to live her life in the midst of horrific trauma that transpired with her being captured and separated from her family for many years. She doesn’t remember what happened to her, but seeing how much has changed since her departure must be an emotionally wrecking experience.

Now, it’s time to get back to the main focus of this article: Who is this man? Here are a few theories:

An attorney – The number of people behind him, plus the way in which they are seating and the abundance of color, suggest that this scene is taking place in a courtroom. There’s too much brightness for it to be a funeral, and this man has the serious look on his face of someone who is there to get the job done.

An investigator of some sort – Staying with the courtroom setting, maybe this man is someone assisting the prosecution of a case.

The main villain of the season – Is this the serial killer who Emily was chasing before her disappearance? There is soemthing to be said for one of the big villains of the whole season to be hiding in plain sight.

A family member – Maybe this is someone related to Emily, and he is trying to encourage her to keep going and embrace what is there for her. This one image could be somewhat out of context, and designed almost as an intentional red herring in order to throw us as a viewer slightly off the scent. This is certainly something that they are capable of doing.
