Britain’s Got Talent review: How Miss Treat Vibe, DNA, St. Patrick’s Junior Choir fared in live show #1

St. Patrick’s Junior Choir – They’re coming off of a great audition via “Somewhere Only We Know.” Unfortunately, here their backing track got in the way and stopped the performance from the jump. They had to restart, but we can sense the online drama already. For the record, they weren’t “miming” or anything of the sort — most singers on this show have a slight backing track for the sake of amplifying the sound and keeping everything in time. You just have to accept that if you’re voting for such an act.
the big issue with the choir was simply that the magic wasn’t there with this “Roar” performance. It was well-sung, but nothing that pops versus prior ones over the years. Grade: B-.
PC Dan – This act is exactly what it is: A dad-dancing cop who has no business being anywhere near the final of the show. This was stupid, but moderately amusing for about twenty seconds before the shame started to creep in that all of the professional dancers in the background had to make PC Dan look cool. Grace: C-.
Niels Harder – While PC Dan was at least bad-but-fun, this was actually pretty terrible through and through. There was a lot of dancing about, and the magic (which is the most important part of the act) wasn’t all that good. It was so out of control that there was no finesse behind the tricks, or buildup to them. They died seconds after they were revealed. Grade: D-.
Kyle Livingston – “When We Were Young” is not an easy song to do, but Kyle by and large did a wonderful job. By far, he was the best of the first four to hit the stage. The most impressive part of this performance was his stage presence for someone so young. Maybe he was nervous, but he didn’t show it while he was singing. You were just thrown into his world. Grade: A.
Empire Dance Crew – This was far better than the standard BGT dance crew. While there could be have been more athleticism and uniqueness to the moves, there was a sense of purpose and of story within this performance. The big criticism here is quite simple: Fewer members. Get rid of the crowd-noise, and focus on the individuals and the narrative. Grade: B.
DNA – Other than having to sit there for thirty seconds while Simon found the right page in the dictionary, this was a fantastic performance through and through. There is obviously a secret to how these guys do it, and the skill isn’t what is impressive here. It’s more about the presentation, the buildup, and the drama. They completely nailed that. Grade: A-.
Tyrone & Mina – Incredibly entertaining and terrifying all the while. While it’s true that many of these knife-throwing stunts are ones that we’ve seen before, it’s stupid to be mad about that because singers do that all of the time. A fantastic act! (Also, we don’t think that David Walliams’ joke about Simon Cowell sending women on their way got enough play in the room.) Grade: B+.
Miss Treat Vibe – This was a girl group that really wanted to show that they were current and hip in between their “Shackles” performance and the rap in the middle of it. To their credit, they were VERY talented and they worked the stage well. The only thing that held them back was in the second half of the song when the vocals got a tad out of control, and the staging in general was a little too bright and not edgy enough for their sensibilities. Grade: B.
