Master of None season 3: Is renewal for Aziz Ansari comedy assured?

Master of None season 3

With the episodes streaming starting today, is a Master of None season 3 on Netflix a sure thing? Not necessarily, but it seems likely.

At the moment, the biggest thing working for the Aziz Ansari – Netflix series is strictly that: Aziz Ansari. The streaming service has one of the biggest names in comedy on board a funny, layered series with a ton of awards-show acclaim. What this amounts to mostly is a perfect combination for them. Master of None provides Netflix great publicity, and in turn gives Ansari something that he will revisit at his own leisure.

This is one of the things to remember here about a season 3 renewal above all else — there’s no hurry. There wait between season 1 and season 2 lasted a good year and a half; therefore, it’s feasible to think that a third season for Master of None would not air on the streaming service until 2019. Netflix will likely renew it long before then, and Aziz can go off, do standup, and build the stories and the material necessary to continue the journey of the show. Given that some of the material is autobiographical here, it’s best to be able to live before coming back to make more. It’s a similar phenomenon to what FX and Louie have practiced over time.

Netflix does not release viewership data, so they are the only ones who will truly know how Master of None is performing. Nonetheless, expect a renewal announcement over the next month or two once they start to get some of the delayed-viewing data. There will be some viewers who make it through the show this weekend. (These people are beasts with the binge-watching!) The average viewer, meanwhile, will likely accomplish the full journey of the show over the course of the next month or so.

With Master of None season 3 likely far down the horizon, is it possible to get another Saturday Night Live hosting gig for him in the interim? He brought so much laughter and warmth to the show, and at a time after Inauguration when there were so many people out there in need of it.
