Making History, Son of Zorn, APB canceled at Fox; season 2 hopes shot
Making History – The Adam Pally comedy is the victim of there being a billion time-travel shows on the air at the moment. Interestingly, the conceit of time travel is probably being sent now into the past by networks all over the country. While Legends of Tomorrow remains on the air, this show joins Timeless and Time After Time as series canceled after a single season on the air.
This one’s a shame, given that it was legitimately funny and the best role of Leighton Meester’s career. (Yes, Gossip Girl included.)
Son of Zorn – Live action / animated hybrids are super-tough to make work. This one never did. There was a great cast led by the voice of Jason Sudeikis, but the audience didn’t sustain and the stories felt a tad too predictable once you got the idea that Zorn was a He-Man blowhard type of guy trying to survive in the ordinary world.
APB – The show was doomed from the moment that someone decided to call it APB, given that it’s terrible title for compelling series about a super-rich guy trying to use modern technology to reinvigorate policing. In between this and Pure Genius, networks also may realize now something else that doesn’t work — shows about really rich people trying to change the world with their technology.
Fox’s current renewals / cancellations
As of this writing Thursday morning, Gotham, Lucifer, The Last Man on Earth, The Simpsons, Lethal Weapon, and Empire are all for sure coming back for more episodes. Meanwhile, Rosewood and Sleepy Hollow are officially dead, and we learned earlier this month the terrible news about Pitch not coming back for more. Bones ended its run earlier this spring.
What’s still out there?
Out of the remaining shows that are still out there for Fox, expect to see Scream Queens kicked to the curb despite a fairly innovative premise. The MasterChef / MasterChef Junior franchise is obviously coming back. New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine are still on the bubble, and the same goes for The Exorcist and 24: Legacy on the drama side. More news about some of these shows should be made clear in the coming days.
