Scandal season 6 episode 11: Shonda Rhimes on Portia de Rossi decision

Tonight, Scandal season 6 episode 11 proved to be very much shocking — we learned about a new organization, and at the same time saw the end of the road for one beloved character in particular in Elizabeth North. While Portia de Rossi wasn’t an original series regular, she was someone who was a huge part of the past couple of seasons. She hadn’t been a big part of season 6, and losing her here seemed to be a part of a larger plan.

As previously reported, Portia left the show as a result of her own request; the actress is actually looking to get a little bit further away from acting, and with that, wanted more to look towards some other pursuits. Creator Shonda Rhimes took her time finding the right spot to remove Liz from the chessboard, and this was it.

Shonda released a statement tonight (per Deadline) talking about the end of the road for this character — take a look at some of what she had to say:

“I have been a fan of Portia’s for years and it was an honor to have her join our Scandal family … Portia infused Liz North with a smart powerful vulnerable soul while also making the humor sing — and that brought all of us in the writers room a lot of joy. If I could keep her forever, I would — but kidnapping is illegal. Besides, I am incredibly impressed with the vision she has for her creative future. I wish her all the best.”

Interestingly, we also do wonder what Portia’s exit and decision to spend less time acting could mean for the future of another show in the Arrested Development revival. This has been something else that there’s been plenty of conversation, but we presume that there will be some other time to talk about this down the road.

For now, let’s just take a deep breath. There is still a lot to digest when it comes to Scandal, so let’s just see what transpires as we get further and further into the season. We’re not that far from the end of the road.
