Designated Survivor season 2 (if renewed) will have new showrunner

Designated Survivor season 2

Designated Survivor season 2 seems to be close to a sure thing. ABC is struggling right now mightily in the ratings, and they need someone to rely on. This show is one of the strongest performers for the network in terms of new series, and with that, we anticipate good news come May.

With that being said, a potential second season for the Kiefer Sutherland show is going to undergo a few creative changes. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jeff Melvoin will not serve as the showrunner for a second season of the show. He will remain as an executive producer in the event that the show comes back.

Creative changes for second-year shows are at this point fairly common, and this is not the only one that could be facing this sort of swap. We’ve already heard that Bull season 2 is going to be having a new showrunner of its own. The one difference is that in the case of Bull, we do know at this point that it’s going to be coming back. The jury’s technically still out here … even if we don’t see any major reason to worry.

If there is one thing that we would say about the future of Designated Survivor, it is that the show should try to focus in and concentrate a little bit more on the politics and the characters than trying to come up with new ways to blow the roof off week in and week out. The more that you try and do that, the more difficult you’re making it on yourself down the road to be able to top yourself. So many of the best series don’t go for an over-abundance of twists, and there is a good reason for that. You shouldn’t have to rely on the “crazy” in order to get people interested in your show.

We anticipate that news on a Designated Survivor season 2 will be out there at the latest by the time we roll around to May, but it would not surprise us in the slightest if we actually did get an opportunity to find out the news before then.
