Black Sails season 5: Could Starz ever revive pirate drama down the road?
In some ways, you should look at the term “series finale” as proof that this is not something that Starz is planning. If they were going to renew the show, they would’ve already done that. The reality that we are facing tonight is that this is likely the end of where the writers wanted to get with the tale of Captain Flint, who was to us the centerpiece of the entire narrative. Sometimes when you are a premium-cable series, there is something to be said for knowing your end date. You don’t want to overstay your welcome, so it’s better from time to time to go out when there is still that demand for something more.
Of course, we will spend a minute or two getting a tad more creative here given in theory, you can argue that it’s possible that Starz could consider some different iterations of the franchise down the line. After all, you just have to remember that pirates as a subject matter are something that will never go out of style, and with that, there are some other ways for the network to play around with the idea of bringing more to the table if that is something that they ever decided to do.
One way that you could bring the show back is to go even earlier than the days of Flint, and present some sort of pirate origin story, if you will. Show more of the foundations to this way of life and the lead-up to it more so than what we had here. Or, simply go to a different part of the world and focus on a different form of pirating than the one that we saw with this show. Maybe it’d be a little strange to have pirates in Asia or Africa speaking English, but there are some interesting cultural avenues out there to explore. Granted, in doing this we’re not quite sure that it would be a Black Sails season 5 so much as it would be an entirely different show, similar to Sons of Anarchy or Mayans MC.
Still, it’s something to think about and consider as we watch this particular pirate extravaganza sail into the sunset.
Do you want to see the Black Sails franchise return someday in a different shape or form? Be sure to share now in the comments!
Meanwhile, be sure to head over here if you’ve got an interest in getting some further coverage for tonight’s series finale for the show. (Photo: Starz.)

I would really like to see Black Sails return. I would like to see some of the original cast in it. Maybe in a different place. Like maybe in Key West chasing the Fountain of Youth or in the Carolina’s searching for Teach’s lost treasure.
