Ratings: The Originals fighting for season 5; Grimm series finale rises

Originals

How is The Originals faring in its quest to get a season 5 on The CW? We’ve got the latest ratings for you today, and if there’s one word that we’d use to describe them, it’s “hopeful” … at least for the time being.

Friday night’s new episode of the CW show ended up generating in total a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which once again remains even with all of the episodes that aired beforehand. It also improved slightly to 1.04 million viewers. One interesting note here is that so far, the series is averaging the same exact demo and slightly more viewers than the final season of The Vampire Diaries, and impressive feat given that the final episodes of that show generated a slight ratings increase. It’s also performing far better than Reign, and easily out-performed the already-renewed Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.

What we’re trying to say here is fairly clear — through three episodes, The Originals should be renewed for another season. While it’s one of the lower-rated series, it’s also airing at a tough time and is doing better than almost any other show that they’ve thrown on the night so far. Also, giving it another 13-episode season is a great way to have it on clean-up duty in case The CW orders a new series that quickly bottoms out in the ratings.

We should know the future of The Originals one way or another come May, when the network has their upfront presentation.

Other odds and ends

The Grimm series finale drew a 0.9 rating, its best numbers since the end of the premiere. It’s nice to see the show go out with a bigger number, and a tie for #1 with MacGyver in its timeslot. Elsewhere on CBS, Blue Bloods and Hawaii Five-0 both generated a 1.0. All the CBS shows are coming back, so there’s not really anything to worry about there.

Meanwhile, the Sleepy Hollow finale generated a 0.5 rating, which was down slightly versus the prior week. That really doesn’t give us hope for its future, given that this is Fox and the expectation is that it’ll perform so much better than something on The CW. Then again, we didn’t think it would be renewed last time either, and yet here we are. Anything’s technically possible within the TV world.
