The Mindy Project season 6 renewal: Will it happen for Hulu series?
At the moment, what we know is that season 5 is wrapping up, and that Mindy Kaling is looking to develop some other projects. She’s executive-producing a pilot over at NBC right now, and it’s one that she could even recur on in the event it’s picked up. (Read more about that over at the link here.)
As we’ve said in the past, Kaling’s involvement on that show would likely not impede the future of The Mindy Project; from our vantage point, the future of this show is based more on her and Hulu wanting to come together and do more. We do think that the show’s fallen off a bit since moving to the streaming service unfortunately, and part of that from our vantage point is simply due to the sheer number of episodes. While season 5 was 14 episodes (a more reasonable number), season 4 topped out at a vicious 26! Since 2012, Kaling’s done more than 100 episodes of this show, and that’s a lot for a single-camera comedy that you’re so personally invested in. We’d like to see it return with more of a ten-episode format, something similar to Louie where she’s able to let the project breathe a little bit and come back whenever she wants to.
If the show doesn’t go this route, then maybe announce a final season if everyone wants to move on. The one thing that we do know is that we don’t want today’s finale to be the end of the road, since there was barely any buzz around it. This is a show that’s had some extremely funny years and some great performances. It deserves to go out with a bang, and with something celebrating its time on the air and its overarching legacy.
Hopefully, we’ll hear something about the future of the series in one form or another in the near future. We’ll let you know if any news pops up on this end.
