Designated Survivor season 2 renewal odds: The state of things
The good news through two episodes of the second half of the season is that the ratings are not worse off than the show was during the latter stages of the fall run. As a matter of fact, the midseason premiere posted a 1.3, a rating that is slightly better than some of the episodes before it. It’s too bad that the show then fell back to a 1.1 for the episode following that, which matches the lowest rating for the show to date.
Is Designated Survivor the runaway hit that ABC hoped that it would be? Probably not, but it’s still good when you consider some of the variables here for a minute. For example, look at how many of the other shows on the network are faring at 10:00 p.m. Eastern. Of them, How to Get Away with Murder is the only one that can draw any sort of comparison. The Kiefer Sutherland show is at present performing far better than Quantico, The Catch, Agents of SHIELD, or American Crime. It’s a show that has some star power, and given everything happening in the real world right now, it’s fair to assume that politics are not going to diminish as a big-time conversation piece in the slightest.
The biggest thing that Designated Survivor may have to figure out is how to deliver much of the power based on the characters more so than the twists and let the performances speak for themselves. To make a good comparison here, we think that this is one of the reasons why a show like Grey’s Anatomy stays so steady and consistent over time — while there are twists here and there, it doesn’t have that philosophy where every story needs to be as crazy as possible. That’s something that’s been done-to-death now on other shows like Scandal, Quantico, and to a certain extent this one. Think of that as a bit of constructive criticism for the future.
