The Good Fight season 2 renewal: CBS All Access orders more episodes

One of the biggest mysteries of the streaming year was whether a The Good Fight season 2 would happen. Given that the Good Wife spin-off airs on CBS All Access as opposed to the flagship network, there’s nothing that predicates them needing to release further information on the show or its ratings. Even today, we still don’t know how well it’s fared, or whether or not the series starring Christine Baranski and Cush Jumbo is bringing in a substantial amount of money.

What we do know is that it’s clearly done enough for the network to order The Good Fight season 2 before the first season even ends. In a statement,  CBS Interactive CEO Marc DeBevoise had the following to say:

“This series and its characters are just beginning and we can’t wait to see where Robert and Michelle King, their creative team and the amazing cast take The Good Fight next.”

It was extremely important for CBS All Access to give this show a great vote of confidence early on in the process, given that otherwise you did run the risk of looking as though your experiments with original programming were some sort of failure. In renewing this show now, you mitigate that to a certain degree and you can prepare a little bit more for some other projects that you want to see also be a success. For example, you’ve got Star Trek: Discovery coming out at some point later this year, and give its budget and the size and scale of what they are trying to pull off over there, the expectations are going to be high that it can deliver some sort of success. Renewing The Good Fight before that may help to further ensure that there is a subscriber base that does end up sticking around.
