Why The Vampire Diaries season 9 will never happen
Let’s just put it this way: If you have something that you love in terms of a show, odds are that you don’t want to see it go anywhere. You love it, you love the characters, and you feel like it’s a part of your world. We also know that we’re in this era where TV show revivals are pretty common, and in one way or another, you’ve come to expect them.
Here’s the bad news now: It doesn’t appear as though we will be getting The Vampire Diaries season 9 now, a year from now, or even five years from now. We don’t think you can close the door for good on anything, but the odds of it happening here are lower than the vast majority of long-running shows out there.
First and foremost, remember that many of the cast members on the show have said themselves that they don’t have that great of an interest in coming back to do more. They would need to want it for that to happen, and we get the sense that everyone from Ian Somerhalder to Paul Wesley is ready to move on and do something different. If they ever did want to come back down the road, remember that they are supposed to play immortal vampires. The longer the show lasts, and the more challenging it has to be for the two guys to look the same as they did eight years ago. (We also figure that they’re probably also rather thrilled to just be sporting some facial hair for the first time in forever.)
Also, now remember that the ratings weren’t all that great for the show at the time in which it ended. You need to be popular at the time you’re going out for this to be considered, and we’d say that The Vampire Diaries was at its most popular around season 2 or season 3 in terms of publicity and having a huge stamp in the entertainment world. It’s now a Friday show that probably wouldn’t be getting a ton of press were it not the final season.
