Is Victoria new tonight on PBS? Discussing episode 7, schedule conundrums
The past few weeks have become synonymous with one program on PBS, and with that it’s fair to ask the question: Is Victoria new tonight?
The answer to that, sadly, is no, but there’s an interesting discussion to be had about it that gives you some into what the network’s perceptions are of their target demographic. Earlier this month, PBS aired a new episode of the British period drama featuring Jenna Coleman against the Super Bowl. Meanwhile, the network then also aired a new episode opposite the Grammys.
So why take the week off for the Oscars? We feel like there are two main reasons for that above anything else.
1. The nature of the demographics – Are the same people who love the Oscars also the same people who love Victoria? There must be some sort of evidence given the fact that the two
2. The fact that this is the finale – Hey, it’s a little different when it’s an episode in the middle of the season, but since this is the last episode of the show airing potentially until 2018 (at least in America, if they keep the schedule the same), you want it to get as big a rating as humanly possible.
The show will be back in action next week, and the biggest thing that we can tease for that is that we’re going to see the young Queen at a crossroads, dealing further with the political pressure that stems from her relationship with Albert. There have been some stories and discussions that have been a central part of most of the season, and they will be culminating thematically in the final episode. The struggle with this show is that you have to find a way to adhere to history, while at the same time produce emotions and a narrative in a way that still builds to a climax. This show does that, and hopefully there will be a little bit of a payoff that you experience when the show returns. (You can view a preview for it now over here.)
