‘Bull’ episode 13 review: Was it game over for an eSports star?
After a short hiatus, “Bull” returned on Tuesday night with a new episode in “The Fall” that ventured into a world that we love: Video games. Granted, we’re not much of an eSports player, but at the same time we are familiar with this world and it was interesting getting a chance to see that presented on TV.
First, kudos to the show for actually using “Titanfall” and not doing that stupid thing where you see a fake game on the screen that is obviously being used so that the network doesn’t have to pay anyone. Also, kudos for getting some real people in this world to guest-star, including former “X-Play” host in Morgan Webb. this brought us way back to the days of Tech TV. We miss that.
Tonight’s focus – Introduce Jace Rundle, one of the best players out there for the game. However, he was facing questions and a lawsuit over whether or not he threw a recent game. The eSports world is far more complex and intricate than almost anyone out there would imagine. There is a ton of money within this universe, and as a result of that, there was a lot on the line as a result of him losing this match.
As Bull went into the trial, he faced a couple of challenges. First, he had to do his part to prove that this guy was relatable when facing a journey of cynics, especially some who may not consider what he’s doing to be a “real job.” Following that, he also had to figure out whether or not he was actually guilty of throwing the match. Bull did get an answer to that, but it wasn’t a happy one — after all, he learned over time that Jace had Parkinson’s Disease, and that was causing some of his precision to be off in the game. The problem that Jace faced was that he felt this was a no-win situation. If he made it clear that he had Parkinson’s, his career would be over. Otherwise, it was possible he could lose the case.
Eventually, Bull and Jace figured out a compromise, one in which Jace got a settlement in order to make it back on the team; the lawsuit was over, and he got a non-disclosure agreement so he could keep playing without his diagnosis becoming common knowledge.
A romantic subplot – Did Bull get himself a new love interest in the opposition’s attorney Abigail? There were a few moments where it looked as though this could be the case. She certainly was open to the idea by the episode’s end, but it’s unclear if we’ll ever see her again.
Overall – We want to be bitter and say that we preferred the game to be “Super Smash Bros.” … but we won’t. This was a fun episode that gave some insight into a world that many “Bull” viewers probably won’t know much about. There was some humor in the episode, but more than that some fun character development a sense of intensity and excitement. It’s one of the episodes we’ll likely remember the most when looking back at the show near the end of the season. Episode Grade: B+.
