Ratings Progress Report: Is ‘Shadowhunters’ season 2 charting towards season 3 renewal?
While we may only be a handful of episodes into “Shadowhunters” so far this season, we’re starting to get a pretty good sense of how it’s performing aside from the story. We’re speaking specifically of the ratings, the one thing that will either keep the show on the air for a long time or cause it to go about its merry way.
Let’s get the bad news out into the universe now, mostly so that we can move on to some happier things: So far during the second season, we are seeing “Shadowhunters” average around a 0.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic. That is down around 20% from its first season, and you do want to see it keep its ratings steady as much as possibly can. Are there some extenuating circumstances here? Absolutely. For one, this is a show that is time-shifted heavily, with a lot of people watching after the fact. It Is also a show with an impressive international following. Unfortunately, we do think that the thing that networks like Freeform care about the most are the live ratings and the ad revenue that goes along with it. This is what needs to be there to give the show the best show that it can have of trying to move forward.
As for the good news, there’s plenty of it that begins with the massive social following that is already there for this show through a little over a season. It is absolutely clear that there is plenty of love out there for it among fans, and if something ever was to happen to it, they’d fight tooth and nail in order to see it alive. There probably won’t be much a need for that, but it is a nice feather for the show to have in its cap.
Meanwhile, this is a show that is still generating better numbers than many other cable shows out there, and it is doing so without an established lead-in. When Freeform gave the second season a whopping 20 episodes, they made it clear that they wanted it to be thought of as a network staple. It’s adapted from a beloved book series, and as more characters are introduced, we do think that the excitement around it is going to build.
So for now, the passion and the potential should keep the show alive, but we still advise all of you to watch it live! Also, be sure to recommend it to as many of your friends and family as possible in order to boost the numbers further.

I REALLY hope that there is a Season 3 (and many more) of Shadowhunters! I feel like by the end of Season 2 all of the characters were really starting to feel comfortable in their skin and with who they are. PLUS, they can’t leave us on such a cliff hanger with who in the world stole the sword! (Although, I read the books just as fast as they were released years ago, so I already know what happens, but it’s still so fun to watch the pages of my favorite book series -besides Twilight- come to life!)
