‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 13: Ellen Pompeo to make directorial debut

Grey's -Grey’s Anatomy” has a long tradition of its actors directing various episodes. We often see Kevin McKidd and Chandra Wilson at the helm, and while executive producer Debbie Allen only makes occasional appearances as Catherine Avery, we have also seen her take on this role on occasion.

Now, we’re getting a chance to see Meredith Grey herself step into the role. Sources confirm that Ellen Pompeo will be directing her first episode of the show a little bit later this season — there are not many other details available at this time, but it’s an additional challenge that should be fun to see her take on. We would imagine that this episode would not be altogether focused on her character, just because it’s challenge to have the time to both film a ton of scenes and also direct everyone else in the process. Luckily, this show does have a pretty enormous cast, so there are plenty of other storylines that she can focus on. For example, think about the relationship between April and Jackson, or everything that is going on with Alex. You’ve also got the potential relationship between Arizona and Eliza Minnick, and the debate as to whether or not Webber will continue to have the support of all of his fellow doctors. There are also many stories to come that we likely haven’t even heard about yet.

The irony here is that if Pompeo had been tasked with tonight’s episode, it would’ve been almost perfect for her debut — it’s based largely around Bailey, Jo, and Arizona. As it is, though (we’ve already had a chance to see the episode), there’s a lot of fantastic stuff in here from start to finish. It’s certainly worth watching life if you’ve got the time to do so tonight.

So far this season, we’ve already seen McKidd, Wilson, and Allen direct episodes; it’s a long season, so there may be more opportunities for them to take on episodes moving forward this season.
