‘This Is Us’ episode 11: Is Toby dead?

Going into Tuesday night’s new episode of “This Is Us,” there was one question that the majority of viewers wanted an answer to … and it just so happens to also be the question in the title of this article.

(Warning: As you would expect, there are some MAJOR spoilers coming up in this article.)

Toby lives! We have to admit that we expected things to go very sideways based on the way in which NBC was promoting this episode — and also our natural sort of fear that this show likes to completely rip our heart out of our chest. However, what this was from the show’s point of view was simply some very-smart marketing. They promoted the show as though he wasn’t coming back, but didn’t tip their hand so obnoxiously that we thought that it was a fake-out.

What this revelation means moving forward is mostly that he does have a new lease on life, at least provided that he is going to be able to live in a way that is safe for both him and for Kate. It’s going to take a lot of willpower on his part, but we think that he has it judging mostly on how he was feeling prior to the medical event even happening. If you recall, he made a grand gesture to try to win Kate back by reminding her that he would do just about anything for her — and she was definitely worth giving up some of the terrible food that was causing him to gain weight in the first place.
