Golden Globes 2017: Will Donald Glover, Jeffrey Tambor, or Anthony Anderson win Comedy Actor?
In this latest edition of our Golden Globe preview series today, what we are going to do our part to try and deliver is our analysis on the Actor in the Comedy Series field, and interesting one this year in that it’s filled with some familiar faces, a new nominee, and a complete surprise that blindsided us when the nominations were first announced.
There are a few other categories this year where we do feel like the race is a little more up in the air, but we don’t feel like it’s as open a race here — and we’re saying that with the consideration in mind that the Globes do tend to be a tad unpredictable. In our head there is a pretty clear favorite, but it will be interesting to see where the needle points here precisely when some of the dust starts to settle.
Actor in a Comedy Series – The Nominees
Anthony Anderson, “black-ish” (ABC)
Gael Garcia Bernal, “Mozart in the Jungle” (Amazon)
Donald Glover, “Atlanta” (FX)
Nick Nolte, “Graves” (EPIX)
Jeffrey Tambor, “Transparent” (Amazon)
Who will win – Glover. He’s coming off of winning the Critics’ Choice Award in this category, and his performance and participation on the show capture much of what the Globes are about: Uniqueness, and developing your own voice and method of performance. That’s why they were one of the first champions of both Bernal and Tambor’s work, and because the two of them have already won, they’re less likely to honor a repeat win.
As for the rest of the field, we think that Anderson may almost be too mainstream for the Globes and their outside-the-box thinking. Meanwhile, Nolte’s nomination was one we never saw coming just because his show does lie so far off the radar even when it comes to cable series.
Who should win – It may be predictable, but Glover again. If you watch “Atlanta,” it’s hard to think anything otherwise given that it was one of the best performances of any actor, regardless of genre, in 2016. We would probably put Anderson #2 just because of how consistently undervalued he is, with Tambor, Bernal, and Nolte following in that order.
