CarterMatt Awards 2016: Caterina Scorsone of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ wins Underrated Actress

Through the lens of our CarterMatt Awards, what it means to be “underrated” is fairly simple. You are beloved and highly respected for your work, but at the same time, you somehow do not receive the respect you deserve for your work from the big awards shows. These actors didn’t receive a Golden Globe, an Emmy, or a SAG Award nomination for their individual work in the past year, and you can make a clear case for them getting one.

Now that we’ve laid all of that out there, let’s give a generous round of applause to one Caterina Scorsone of “Grey’s Anatomy” fame for taking home Underrated Actress this year!

The first thing that we have to do is give some major credit to Scorsone’s fans for really coming out hard in support of her. We had hundreds of thousands of votes across the awards this year, and this was one of the most-popular categories. Even with a dominant lead, fans continued to rally and give her as many votes as possible. She finished with close to 80% of the overall vote, which really speaks for itself. With her vote total, she would have won the vast majority of the categories in the awards this year.

As for why her fans rallied so hard to support her, much of that may have to do with the magnitude of her work and the effort she puts into every scene dating back to “Private Practice.” Even if you cannot relate specifically to some of Amelia’s struggles, we’ve all been in dark emotional places before. We’ve all felt pain and heartache, and she channels some of those emotions so wonderfully. Yet, at the same time, she channels joy and exuberance in equal measure. We saw every shade of Amelia in 2016, from her wedding to Owen to some of the pain that came with her believing she was pregnant, only to learn later that this was not the case. Scorsone made this character funny, heartbreaking, hopeful, and so much more over the past twelve months and is certainly deserving of this award a million times over. Now, we just have to wait and see what she brings to the table in 2017.

Scorsone’s win comes after Candice Patton of “The Flash” took home the award in 2015.

Congratulations again to Caterina and her fans!
