Why isn’t the ‘Secrets and Lies’ season 2 finale getting more attention?

Secrets and LiesThis weekend, ABC is airing the season 2 finale of “Secrets and Lies,” a series that at one point had all of the potential in the world to become the next great hit for ABC. An easy comparison to make is between this show and “Revenge” when you think about their tone; or, you could argue that this show is the broadcast version of another brilliant series in AMC’s “The Killing,” one with a small group of stars and a rotating cast around them.

What this show offers is something very few do, and you would think that this would be appealing: A serialized mystery that runs for a full batch of episodes, one that humanizes the suspects and makes the victim into something more than just a mere body on a slab. The case of Kate proved to be a twist-filled affair, and even as we enter the final two episodes, there are many questions that remain. The sneak peek below is a testament to that, given that the Warner family is still willing to turn on one another over the murder. In order to protect his father, Pat goes so far as to proclaim that Eric was responsible for pushing his mother down the stairs decades ago, and therefore should be the biggest suspect in what happened to his wife.

In the end, we think the expression on Eric’s face when he hears these words out loud speaks largely for itself. Even if he’s innocent, that doesn’t look good.

As a whole, the biggest issue with season 2 is that, for the most part, viewers have not been able to find them. How can you blame them when you consider the following two factors?

Consider the hiatus – By the time season 2 premiered, it had been over fifteen months since the end of the first season. Given that we’re in a culture where people often forget what they were doing ten minutes ago with all of the distractions that are out there, it’s a little unreasonable to think that we will be able to remember to watch a show that was last on in the spring of 2015.

Competition – Look at the Big Three — “Westworld,” NFL football, and “The Walking Dead.” It’s hard for any reasonable show to survive that.

The title – “Secrets and Lies” may be an apt title for what the show is about, but it’s hardly a hook to convince new people to watch. Unfortunately, this is not something you can do anything about not.

It seems likely that the season 2 finale will be the series finale, and if that is the case, the only thing to hope for is that the writers craft a fitting conclusion that encapsulates all of the story that has be told to date, while also giving us something further to think about in terms of the criminal mind.
