‘Dancing with the Stars’ finale: Was James Hinchcliffe, Laurie Hernandez, or Calvin Johnson season 23 winner?
“Dancing with the Stars” is, regrettably, a show with only one winner — therefore, there are going to be plenty people competing on the show who are feeling a little bit disappointed when they don’t end up being declared the winner. Maybe they are happy for the journey, but at the same exact time, everyone wants to win.
What makes this season so remarkable is that the final three were all very likable, and there wasn’t really an ending that we would find to be a bummer. We do think that in some ways, though, this show does have a tendency to telegraph its results a little bit. For example, it felt fairly clear to us that Calvin Johnson & Lindsay Arnold were not going to be winning when he kept performing first of the final three — though we probably didn’t need the show to tell us that he probably wasn’t going to win this. He was finishing last of the three in many pre-show picks. Our sentiment was that, in the end, we’d be looking at a showdown between James Hinchcliffe & Sharna Burgess and Laurie Hernandez & Val Chmerkovskiy.
Ultimately, much of this went according to how we predicted: Calvin was in third, James was second, and Laurie was the season 23 winner!
Now, we understand there being some frustrations when it comes to the predictability of this. We said the moment of the cast reveal Laurie would win, and we weren’t exactly reaching with that. She was the most-talented person naturally in the field! Yet, it’s hard to argue against her as a worthy champion, and someone who really deserved it after dealing with death in the family and a busy schedule still coming off of the Olympics.
If you have a further quibble, we would suggest that you hope for different casting moving forward. There’s a reason why gymnasts do tend to do so well on this show!
