‘American Horror Story: Roanoke’ debate: Will Lee survive the finale?
At the end of Wednesday night’s new episode of “American Horror Story: Roanoke,” the prophecy did come true: Lee was the last person within the newest series “Return to Roanoke: Three Days in Hell” to survive. This even includes the newbie camera crew led by Sophie (Taissa Farmiga), who really didn’t know what sort of insanity they were getting themselves into.
Before we dive any deeper, let’s stop for a moment to offer up some credit to executive producer Ryan Murphy for doing something unexpected, and not having Sarah Paulson still be around for the finale. Sure, she’s an amazing actress, but it would be a tad too predictable to follow the same pattern as both “Asylum” and, to a certain extent, “Coven” with her being the Supreme.
Let’s get back to Lee now. It was not entirely clear in the episode tonight how much she remembered about what she did murdering Monet, Sophie, and others. Therefore, how does she react from this in the future? If she was complicit in some way, maybe she finds a way to bury it and go about living her life. If not, we cannot imagine this ending for her anywhere other than in a mental institution given that she seemed beyond distraught in the closing minutes.
Can Lee survive the series now? It wouldn’t really feel that satisfying if she managed to get away from all of this relatively scot-free, and with nobody knowing what she did. Her actions against her husband are the most inexcusable part of this, especially since she had that for so long before going back for the “Return to Roanoke” series. We don’t root for death per se, but we don’t want to see her leave this series the one character who gets to move forward … if everything is as cut-and-dry as it seems.
The largest question that we still have is precisely what it is that we’ve been watching this whole time. Someone has obviously packaged together this footage for our enjoyment given that we’re seeing that title card pop up throughout the episode. If we were supposed to believe that we’d move away from this concept, why do that? Why not tell us that we’re seeing footage that had never aired on TV before? There’s still a good chance that maybe nobody is really as dead as we think…
