Crossover November: Could the ‘Gotham’ season 3 world ever cross paths with ‘Arrow,’ ‘The Flash’?
Crossover November is back! We first introduced this series last year as a way to consider some unlikely-but-fun crossover possibilities featuring a number of shows, and the only real prerequisite that we had was that the crossover had to make at least a reasonable amount of sense. For example, we’re not interested in pairing up “Westworld” with “Halt and Catch Fire.”
In kicking things off this year, we’re talking about an idea that while reasonably unlikely, could be fun if you really wanted to stretch things: “Gotham” and the Greg Berlanti universe over on The CW. We’re talking here about putting this show’s Bruce Wayne in the same world as “Supergirl,” “The Flash,” “Arrow,” and “Legends of Tomorrow.” There are ways in which this idea could make perfect sense, but also at the same time reasons why this would never happen in a million years.
How it could work – For one, the structure of the multiverse is one with unlimited possibilities. For example, Supergirl does not exist in the same Earth as “Arrow,” “The Flash,” or “Legends of Tomorrow”; yet, there is a way to travel between them. You could easily come up with a construct so that this Gotham is off of another Earth somewhere, and one of the other heroes could stumble onto it. While “Gotham” at first was a world without tangible superpowers, we’ve started to see over time with Hugo Strange’s experiments that such things are in fact possible. Therefore, Jim Gordon meeting Barry Allen isn’t as absurd as we first thought.
We already know that Bruce Wayne is a character within the multiverse in some way — based on what we saw from Barry in Earth-2, he’s got relationships with both Bruce (most likely an older one than the version played by David Mazouz) and Hal Jordan.
On a personal level, we have to assume that there are some relationships already there among the cast members given that many “Gotham” cast members have attended Heroes & Villains Fan Fest events put on by “Arrow” star Stephen Amell.
Why it wouldn’t work – So long as “Gotham” airs on Fox, it’s a waste of time. The two shows may both come from Warner Bros., but there’s even less incentive for Fox to want to do this than there was for CBS and “Supergirl” last year. Maybe if “Gotham” ever moved to The CW for whatever reason, maybe there’s a better chance. We also feel like there are some similar characters across the two worlds that don’t quite work, and the visual aesthetic of “Gotham” is so different that throwing in someone bright and colorful like The Flash or Supergirl may be a little too weird.
“Gotham” is a pretty great show now, and we understand that you don’t always need to put great shows on a course-collision just because it sounds fun in theory. They may be better off separate from one another.
