Will ‘The Night Shift’ have season 4 renewal news soon?
Over the past few weeks we’ve seen the fate decided for many different summer series, and yet, we’re still stuck waiting for some more news on “The Night Shift.”
When you look at the raw data alone, it’s hard to argue any reason for NBC not to want to renew the show. Its ratings proved to be very solid for summer, especially when you look at how significantly many other scripted shows declined year-to-year. In the context of a fall that is continuing to sag with some key franchises posting double-digit declines, the summer numbers look even better. Earlier this year, executive producers Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah told us that they were hoping to have some sort of defined answer on the future of the show by around the time of Halloween, and we’re still waiting now in the first week of November for some news.
So why is everyone waiting this long? There are many different factors that could be considered for it, including that NBC may not be a network in a hurry to decide the future of some of their series, and negotiations on the future may be complicated further by the fact that the show comes from an outside studio in Sony Pictures TV. Typically these days, shows from outside studios don’t always get the same advantages as those produced by a house under the same banner. Luckily, we do think NBC and Sony have a pretty solid relationship, given that both “The Blacklist” and “Timeless” are also shows produced by them.
As Sachs recently posted on Twitter, there should be some news handed down on the future of “The Night Shift” soon, so let’s hope that it’s positive news! We’re in an era where the lack of quality scripted summer content, especially on network TV, is diminishing, so we need as much of it as humanly possible. Our hope here during this time is to keep everyone energized and excited by what could come next for the show in the event that it gets a chance to tell some more stories.
Once there’s something further to report, we’ll have it for you over at the link here. Stay tuned, and tell us in the comments why you want to see “The Night Shift” back! (Photo: NBC.)
