‘The Simpsons’ renewed at Fox through season 30
Excited to see more of “The Simpsons“? While we’re not going to pretend even for a minute that the show is anywhere near as good as it once was, it’s TV comfort food at its finest. Sometimes after a long day (or after NFL football on Sundays), it’s easy to put the show on the air and just relax. You’ll laugh a little bit, you won’t have to think too much, and you can store some episodes for a rainy day when you need them.
Today, Fox announced that they need at least two more seasons of the show as well. With the announcement today that the network is renewing the show through season 30, it will officially pass “Gunsmoke” for the most episodes ever produced for a primetime scripted series. That’s a tremendous achievement no doubt, though we do think it’s almost an apples / oranges comparison since animation and live-action are very different animals. There’s no confirmation one way or the other that season 30 will be the final year for the show on the air, but if it was going to go out, we wouldn’t mind if it did so on a landmark year like this.
Here is what Dana Walden and Gary Newman of Fox Television Group had to say on this subject in a statement:
“This is yet another record-setting moment for what is truly a landmark series … The Simpsons has meant so much to the network, the studio and everyone at Fox, and its continued cultural impact around the globe is a testament to the combined brilliance of [exec producers] Matt, Jim and Al.”
In case you’re wondering why in the world Fox is announcing a renewal for the show in November of all times (typically we see networks make these sort of formal decisions in around April or May), one of the reasons is that “The Simpsons” requires an extensive amount of production time in order to get the animation right. Therefore, if you’re not getting renewals somewhat early, the sentiment is that something is off.
