‘Chicago Med’ season 2 on set: S. Epatha Merkerson on Goodwin’s first love
Thursday night’s new episode of “Chicago Med” will be one of emergency and crisis (as so many of these episodes are), but there are also going to be some moments of reflection. Specifically, we mean this through the lens of S. Epatha Merkerson and her character of Sharon Goodwin. During “Inherent Bias” her first love is going to arrive at the hospital, and she will be faced with key decisions that are difficult for her in the context of the moment. She’s going through such personal turmoil, and this is someone who makes her think back to a simpler, more innocent time where the world was so less complicated. Even though the relationship did not work out, those emotions are still there.
We had a chance to speak with the actress behind the role while we were at the One Chicago Day last month, and she set up this story and Goodwin’s emotional state rather beautifully:
“She’s in the middle of her divorce, and her first love comes to the hospital. I’m working with a great actor in [Robert] Gossett, who folks know from ‘The Closer’ and ‘Major Crimes.’ I’ve known him about thirty years, so it was really lovely to work with him. It was a vulnerable moment for Goodwin … She really loved this man, but he went away, and when he went away she ended up marrying. To have this happening in her personal life, and to have him show up, [the writing was] really quite lovely. I’m looking forward to seeing it.”
We don’t want to spoil the full content of the the remainder of this episode here, but we know that it will be worthwhile viewing, though you may want to have a hankie or two nearby before you get ready to watch it. For a brief tease, we’re including the full promo below if you haven’t see it already, as it details Goodwin’s attempts to try to keep her former love alive even against the advice of some doctors.
