‘Chicago Med’ season 2, episode 6 review: Reese, Manning try to go the extra mile

How can you ever accept the status quo? We’re not sure that this is a personal mantra for many of the characters on “Chicago Med,” but many people within the hospital definitely seem to be practicing it as their motto. It’s one thing to simply do the job at the hospital and call it a day; it’s another altogether to keep pushing during your off hours. Dr. Rhodes hit the library, and for two women in Dr. Reese and Dr. Manning, they faced some of their biggest tests of the series to date.

For Reese, she struggled to figure out the right thing to do when Danny, who was a recent victim of a sex-trafficking scheme, started following her. He wanted help, but didn’t know hot to get it. Eventually, he tried to cut the chip out of his body out of desperation rather than getting treatment for it. He eventually did work his way to the hospital, where Sarah and the other doctors were able to provide him some of help he needed.

Is he out of the woods just yet? Hardly, and that’s where some of the danger for Sarah comes. She was so willing to help him during her own off hours, but we have to wonder if there could be ramifications coming her way from those responsible for the trafficking in the first place.

Meanwhile, Dr. Manning took some solace this week in some young medical visionaries looking to come up with future treatment options after she lost one of her patients. She felt guilty for giving the child’s parents any hope at all before her death, and in the midst of this pain it felt like these children in turn gave her hope that maybe someday, there’s a chance that something more could be done. Powerful performances were here across the board, but especially for Rachel DiPillo and Torrey DeVitto.

For some of the men the story was a little bit lighter this week (it was nice to see Will visiting a former mentor near the end), but we’re okay with that when you are giving the women such strong material that either reminds them why they are doing this (Natalie’s apparently been a science geek since she was a little girl), or further helps them down the path towards becoming the doctor that they ultimately want to be. It wasn’t flashy, but the story was strong. Grade: B+.
